I'll Meet You Halfway

There was nothing there but dusty road and empty sky. It was hot. The dirt was in her mouth and nose, drying up the moisture and making it difficult to breath. She walked for a while and then stopped at a spot in the road, looking before her with eager eyes. She stood on her tip toes, her feet black and dirty from the walk.

Her white dress stuck out in the sandy terrain, brown hair blown into a mess. When she saw his figure walking slowly towards her, her face lit up and a bright circle of light crowned the top of her head for the briefest of moments. She stood, smiling with confidence, holding a flower limply in her hands.

Until he stopped, and remained nothing but a heated boy in dusty open space. Her smile wavered ever so slightly, but she stood patiently nonetheless. The sun never moved, but much time passed.

He remained where he was, looking back occasionally, his feet as dirty as hers, his brown hair as wind blown. His glasses glinted in the sunlight when he turned his head, but she was too far away to see his expressions. It was when he turned to face the road instead of her, deciding whether to go forward towards her embrace or back to where he had come, did her eyes widen with panic and she said in a soft, hoarse tone, "Please don’t leave."

They stood together, far apart.

Aw. Very touching. And well depicted. I hope it’s not a reflection of anything you’re experiencing.

Now please don’t hate me, but it should be ‘…making it difficult to breathe.’ Breathe (as in seethe) is the verb, breath (as in death) the noun.

I know the difference between breathe and breath, Simon.

Just as long as you didn’t think I was being patronising.
